Justin Terry, Intern

Life can often times be daunting, distraught and come with a wide array of challenges. Having a support system and a trusted individual can go a long way in overcoming challenges. My main reason for being a counselor is to help individuals that are looking for a helping hand throughout life.

I saw first hand the effects of generational trauma and the adverse effects it can have on an individuals’ mental health. Without the proper help it can feel as though you are sinking and can’t keep afloat. Mental health was such a taboo subject in the community that I had the privilege of being brought up in. I saw first hand in my family, community, and friends the impacts  mental health has on individuals. Seeing that there was not enough adequate help for others around me made me want to help people. Financial instability, food security, and safety have had psychological effects on people in my community.

I am passionate about helping individuals accomplish goals ,while helping clients get to their true self. Healing is a substantial area that everyone should privy of in totality. My approach is collaborative, empathetic and therapeutic in my approach. I use Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Play Therapy, Existential Therapy, and Music Therapy to help various individuals. Treating anxiety, abandonment, anger, and processing emotions are some of the core values that are ingratiated. My approach is collaborative and empathetic in the overall process.

My educational experiences include attending undergraduate schooling at Illinois College, while double majoring in Communication & Rhetorical Studies and History. I am currently a Masters’ in Clinical Counseling student at National Louis University. I have been working in education for the past 6 years at college access organizations in two high schools as an Academic Advising coach/ mentor. Working with individuals that are from low income backgrounds and are marginalized groups is a core aspect that has been prioritized. In working with adolescents, I seen firsthand the adverse affects mental has individuals. Reaching individuals that are on the mental health side would be substantial and extremely beneficial in reaching the younger and older generation.

When I am not in the office, I care for my mischievous two cats, Night and Lucy. I truly enjoy watching sports, documentaries, and podcasts in my free time. College basketball and football are the sports I truly enjoy watching and seeing in person.  I am a huge history buff and a fan of the University of Illinois basketball team. NCAA  March madness is my favorite time of the year! Fitness has also become a huge part of my identity, and the prioritization of working out is a main priority in my daily life. I have 4 other siblings with the shortest of us being 5’9 and the tallest being 6’4.
